Surfrider Marin Chapter's July Meeting Minutes

Surfrider Marin's Monthly Meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Pig in a Pickle Restaurant in Corte Madera.

Present: Scott Tye (vice-chair), Katy Macek (media coordinator), Heather Asker, Ramy Asker, Brandon Asker, Izzy Fondnazio, Ginger Mhaling and Kim Corona.

  1. The meeting started with introductions of all members because there were so many new faces.
  2. Vice-chair Scott reported on recent events:
    1. Held a beach cleanup on Sunday (July 7). Had about 15 attendees who cleaned up Bolinas Beach.
    2. Noted that he is working on getting more equipment for future cleanups.
  3. Upcoming events
    1. Surf & Coffee Meet Up tabling event 9 a.m. to noon Sunday (July 14) with Addictive Coffee Roasters and 101 Surf Sports, 115 Third St., San Rafael.
      1. Scott noted he is working on getting more equipment for cleanups.
    2. No other upcoming events, but Scott asked for ideas for new locations for cleanups, such as the wetlands in Corte Madera or a kayaking trip out to Kent Island.
    3. Still want to do a screening event, perhaps related to a plastic campaign. Scott mentioned the "We Are All Plastic Now" documentary.
      1. Kim, who does work with Plastic Free Marin, suggested holding a screening and then doing a local panel afterward to extend the discussion.
  4. Izzy, who had previously been involved with Surfrider Marin's social media, said she was hoping to get more involved this summer. Scott asked her if she'd help coordinate with high school clubs. She was on board to help.
  5. Heather, whose son Brandon is in the Marin Swim League, asked about partnering with the various teams, either with tabling or for beach cleanups. She said she'd talk to the president of the league and see what they could do.
  6. The meeting adjourned about 8 p.m.
