Surfrider Marin Chapter's August Meeting Minutes

Surfrider Marin's Monthly Meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Pig in a Pickle Restaurant in Corte Madera.

Present: Jesse Wernick (chair), Scott Tye (vice chair), Katy Macek (resigning as media coordinator after this meeting), Brian "Sharpy" Sharp looking to get involved, Pat Williams (Member in San Mateo Surfrider, surfer since 1965, open to helping out wherever), Carl (paramedic firefighter, on Surf Rescue in OBSF), Izzy Fondnazio (interested in club coordinator), Ingrid (a junior at San Domenico, wants to start a club), Paris, (Ingrid’s mom, interested in an Ocean Friendly Garden) and Francesca Angelo
  1. The meeting started with introductions of all present, a lot of new faces again. 
  2. Chair Jesse reported on SurfWorks 2024, which was held June 25, 26, 28 and 29., at Stinson Beach. 
    1. The surf camp had about 15 instructors and 15 attendees, was a resounding success.
    2. Surfrider Marin Chapter funds the event, which includes 4 day camps with lunches, activities, instructors, equipment and transportation to and from the beach. 
  3. High school club updates
    1. Izzy confirmed she would be interested in coordinating and working with high school clubs. 
    2. Francesca will be Tam High's Surfrider Club president and leads Blue Water Task Force at Tam. 
    3. Ingrid, a junior at San Domenico, is interested in starting and leading a club there.
  4. Water quality testing machine
    1. Jesse will work with Francesca from Tam on supplies and get results on Marin website and Instagram.
    2. And, coordinate with UC Berkeley.
  5. Bank updates 
    1. Jesse said they are still working on switching over the chapter's account from Redwood Credit Union to Wells Fargo (a recent requirement from Surfrider headquarters). 
    2. He said they are waiting for ATM and credit cards before they can make the switch. 
    3. He noted we will not have a checkbook. 
  6. Beach cleanups 
    1. Vice-chair Scott reported that we have done one nearly every month this year.
    2. July 7 cleanup at Bolinas Beach collected about 75 pounds of trash. 
    3. Next cleanup is tentatively planned, pending approval, for Sept. 8 at Rodeo Beach. 
    4. Sept. 21 is California Coastal Cleanup Day. Surfrider Marin will help members coordinate to join a cleanup that is planned outside the organization. 
    5. Scott also said he has received an order of about 60 barrel bags, and is planning to order about 300 more to hand out at future events.
  7. Film screening event 
    1. Scott said he has contacted California Film Institute and Sports Basement, but so far unable to secure a venue to hold a screening. 
  8. Media update 
    1. Katy has updated the website, writing a blog post about the SurfWorks surf camp as well as meeting minutes. 
    2. She also added the executive committee to the website 
    3. Katy will be moving to LA at the end of the month and resigning from her position as media coordinator. 
    4. Celia Villard is still volunteering to post to Surfrider Marin's Instagram account.
